What changes on 1 January 2027

Deutsche Post is changing its letter formats: from 1 January 2027 a single maximum height of 30 mm applies to Maxibrief and Großbrief alike. For the Maxibrief that is a considerable change – until now 50 mm were permitted.

For everyone who sends samples by Maxibrief this means, in practical terms: the shipping height you are used to becomes noticeably tighter. Packaging that passes without question today will no longer fit the format from 2027. The advantage of switching early: you make the change calmly and to plan – instead of under time pressure shortly before the cut-off date.

Frequent question: does the secondary packaging have to be tested to 95 kPa as well?

When biological substances of Category B (UN3373) are sent, we are asked again and again whether the secondary packaging, as well as the primary receptacle, has to be tested to 95 kPa (0.95 bar). Packing instruction P650 requires an either-or: it is enough if either the primary receptacle or the secondary packaging withstands an internal pressure of 95 kPa.

In practice that means: sample tubes from established manufacturers are as a rule already rated for 95 kPa – the secondary packaging then needs no pressure test of its own; it has to be liquid-tight and take the absorbent pad. Our primary receptacles are rated for 95 kPa. For exempt medical specimens a 95 kPa rating is not required in any case – here we additionally have mailing bags and pouches in our range, printed individually on request.
